Full Description
Fulbert of Dover’s Tower, which is located between Peverells Tower and Cannons Gate, along the south western outer curtain wall of Dover Castle is a 14th-century tower in the western defences of Dover Castle, and is now a component of the Cinque ports Prison. It is distinct from other towers in this section of the outer curtain wall, in having a rectangular plan, while structurally it is distinct from the adjoining curtain wall, and internal features (door and window arches) suggest that it may be of late 14th-century date. It is similar to the towers built at Rochester in Edward III’s reign (1327-77).
The tower is rectangular with a slightly battered base on the western side. It is constructed of rectangular blocks of Kentish ragstone. It has a basement, ground floor, and first floor with a single room at each level all linked by a spiral staircase. It is entered from the eastern side through the Cinque Ports prison (which is a later addition). (summarised from sources) (1-2)
