Full Description
A set of six casemates are located between Fitzwilliam Gate and Avranches tower on the northern side of the outer defences of Dover Castle, positioned to lead to the Medieval loops within the outer curtain or in the mural towers. They are likely to date to the Napoleonic period and are buried within the 1750s rampart on the north eastern side of the castle. The two leading to the mural towers are wider than the rest; all the casemates appear to have been equipped with fireplaces, and two stacks survive above rampart level. The southern casemate has a straight joint in its brickwork about a third of the way from the medieval curtain wall, suggesting a change of plan and perhaps a decision to widen the terreplain at this end. The casemate fronts have been altered over the years. The two wider casemates have brick fronts, the southern of the two containing a curious oval brick opening at first floor level. This opens into a small chamber to the south of the main casemate. Summarised from sources (1-2)
