Full Description
The building which is currently in use as a restaurant, located on the south western side of the inner bailey at Dover Castle, was originally constructed in 1756 as a canteen. It was entirely rebuilt in 1901 as a mobilisation storehouse. It was later converted into a gymnasium during the Second World War and then again in 1980 into its present use as a restaurant. It is built of Kentish rag rubble masonry with stone dressings and steel roof trusses boarded and slated. The building incorporates the central mural tower in the west curtain wall of the inner bailey. It is highly likely that the building occupies the site of earlier timber or stone mural buildings.
