Full Description
A series of casemates, known as the East Casemates, are located on the north eastern side of Godwin Road. These were constructed in 1850’s and provided a series of separate barracks and workshops within the rampart along Godwin Road. There are eight casemates in all: one smaller just west of the Gallery entrance, one partly set back in the entrance to Pencester’s Gallery, and six more along the road to the south-east. They are built with a high brick wall providing a revetment to the full height of the rampart, and formed beneath road brick arches, with glazed timber screens on a low brick wall. summarised from sources (1-2)
