Full Description
On the north eastern side of the Shoulder of Mutton Battery, close to the fifth gun emplacement within the ditch, there are three shallow brick vaulted casemates, known as the old Piquet House. These were possibly used as temporary accomodation for the guns’ crews set within the adjoining ditch counterscarp wall. The casemates are all interlinked and each is known to have a fireplace on the end wall, though these have now been blocked. Thew date of these is not certain though they are possibly contemporary with the battery dating to 1874.
The casemate appears to be constructed of red brick which can just be seen through the foliage. Plans show three interconnecting single-storey rooms each with a fireplace on the western wall and lattice door on the eastern wall. There is an entrance to the north and south ends reached via the pathway and steps leading down from the bridge. Summarised from sources (1-2)
