Full Description
Forms part of a terrace of C19th buildings located on the south western side of London Road on a raised pavement which is separated from the busy London Road below by a possibly original iron railing. It is in brown brick with a stuccoed and painted (grey) ground floor and basement level, this stucco is scored to give the impression of large block construction. The door is located on the south eastern side of the façade; it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of six steps with, possibly original, iron railings on the northern side. There is a rendered brick wall on the southern side of these steps separating the front garden area from that of the south eastern neighbour. The door is round headed and there is a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. A further door is located beneath the steps up to the ground floor level, providing separate access to the basement level. There is a single basement level window, this aligns with the window at the ground floor level which, like the door, is also round headed with a small protruding painted sill. There is a rendered string course above the stucco over the ground floor directly beneath the two first floor windows and forms a continuous sill to them both. The first and second floors are in an exposed brick and there are two windows per floor aligning across the floors, all with flat gauged brick arches above. There is a moulded eaves cornice at the top of the second floor with a rendered band below and parapet above. This cornice and parapet is in a fairly poor condition with staining and a fair amount of moss growth. A small central flat roofed dormer window is visible at the roof level above this cornice with metallic flashing on its surround. There is a low brick wall in front of the property, separating the small and untidy front garden area from the street level. Overall, despite some areas of untidiness the building appears to be structurally sound and is in a good condition.
The ground floor door, which is located on the south eastern side of the façade, is likely original and in timber painted grey with five moulded panels. It is round headed with a semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. This window is likely original and is divided into four small panes by timber glazing bars and has a timber frame. There is a further door located beneath the steps up to the ground floor, this was not clearly seen but appears to be modern and in timber painted white. All of the windows are timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The glazing in the lower half of the basement level window has been altered; the upper part consists of three small rectangular panes while the lower is three large rectangular panes. The glazing in the ground floor window is also altered and consists of six large rectangular panes. The four first and second floor windows are all original timber framed sashes divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars. the dormer window was not clearly seen but appears to be modern with a plastic frame. The timber frames at the ground and basement levels are painted grey while the second and first floor windows are painted white, this paintwork is slightly chipped in places but otherwise all the windows are all in a good condition with all panes present and in tact.
The roof level was not seen from the street as it is located behind a parapet, though it appears to be gabled and in slate with the gable ends over the north western and south eastern party walls. There is a central flat roofed dormer (discussed above). There is a rendered stack over the north western party wall, with an aerial attached. (1)
