Full Description
Early to mid C19th double fronted building located on the southern side of Castle Hill Road, at the south eastern end of the terrace. It is in an exposed stock brick with a stuccoed and painted ground floor. Several modern features, including two large lights are attached to this render at the ground floor level. The door is located centrally within the façade, a small rectangular window is located above the transom over this door. There is a decorative triangular pediment supported by pilasters on the door surround. The western pilaster has an original metal boot scraper at its base. There is a window on either side of the door at the ground floor level, both are round headed and have central keystones which have been painted black. A small window is located at the pavement level beneath the western ground floor door, indicating the presence of a basement below this building. A rendered string course is over the stucco at the ground floor level. There are three windows on both the first and second floor levels, aligning with the openings at the ground floor level. All have flat gauged brick arches above and small cast iron railings over the sills. The building is narrower at the eastern end which appears to be only 1 room deep but wider at the western end which is two rooms deep. The rear elevation was not clearly seen but the listing text notes that it is largely unaltered and five of the original C19 sashes with glazing bars survive including a tall round-headed sash to the stacks. Overall this is a well kept building which appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The door is located centrally within the façade, it is in timber painted black with six moulded panels. There is a small rectangular window located above the transom over the door in a fixed timber frame. The two ground floor windows are both round headed. All windows are original timber framed sashes divided into 12 panes by timber glazing bars. All of the timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. There is a small opening at the pavement level beneath the western ground floor window, this is glazed with modern glass bricks. The rear elevation was not clearly seen but the listing text notes that it retains many of its original timber framed sashes. All windows are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
Asbestos tile roof with hipped left-hand end. Brick gable end and axial stacks. Overall the roof structure appears to be in a good condition with no signs of bowing. (1)
