Full Description
Large mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street, at the junction between Castle Street and Russell Street. It is in an exposed brick with a rendered ground floor that has a modern commercial use. The ground floor door is located centrally within the façade, it is raised from the street level and accessed via a set of stacked steps. There are large canted bay windows located on either side of this door. Rendered pilasters are located over each of the party walls and there is a moulded cornice running along the whole of the top of the ground floor above the commercial fascia. There are three windows at the first floor level, the central is a three light canted oriel bay while the two outer are flat and have rendered moulded architraves on the surrounds. There are two windows at both the second and third floor levels, aligning with the two outer windows on the first floor level. All have painted flat gauged brick arches above. There is a third blocked window located between the two windows on both the second and third floors, these align with the central portion of the bay at the first floor level and also have flat gauged brick arches above. There is a brick parapet over the top of the third floor with stone coping. The building is quite long and continues onto the western side of Russell Street. This side may be split into two haves, the northern half is the same height at the Castle Street side while the southern I sonly one/ one and a half floors in height. The ground floor level at the northern end of the Russell Street side is also rendered, there are four openings (all of which have been blocked with modern commercial signage), with arched tops. These are divided by rendered pilasters and a moulded cornice runs along the top of the ground floor above all of these openings. There are four windows located across the first, second and third floor levels, one per floor located just off centre and a single third floor window near the south eastern corner. Five further blocked windows are located across this façade, three (one per floor) near the north eastern corner of the building and two below the open third floor window near the south eastern corner. All windows have flat gauged brick arches above. The brick parapet over the top of the third floor with stone coping continues onto this side of the building as well. Two modern gutter/waste water down pipes are located crossing this façade, the brickwork both of these is stained suggesting that they leak or have leaked at some point in the past. In the area at the top of the first floor and immediately below the second floor there are the remnants of a commercial sign which was painted directly into the brickwork. Originally this appears to have read ‘VICTORIA’. At the southern smaller half of the Russell Street façade there are two doors, located next to one another. Both have rendered surrounds. The southern has pilasters with decorative capitals and a moulded cornice above with dentil detailing. A window is located directly above this cornice over the door, this has a flat gauged brick arch above. Two further windows are located at the ground floor level on the southern side of the doors. Both have rendered moulded architraves on the surrounds and protruding headers supported by scrolled brackets. Overall both sides of this building are in a good condition with several surviving original features.
The ground floor door on the Castle street side of the façade is slightly raised from the street level. There is a rectangular window located above the transom over this door in a fixed frame painted brown. There are two large canted bay windows, one on either side of the door at the ground floor level. Each consists of three large fixed panes. There is a large canted oriel bay window located centrally at the first floor level. Each of the three parts of the bay is a timber framed sash. the central portion is wider than the outer and is divided into four large panes while each of the outer sashes are two panes each. All of the other windows across the first, second and third floor levels are flat timber framed sashes divided into multiple panes by timber glazing bars. The first floor windows are divided into 12 panes (three wide by four high) the second floor windows are nine panes (three wide by four high) and the third floor are 16 panes (four wide by four high). The ground floor windows in the northern half of the Russell street façade have all been blocked with modern commercial signage but consist of single panes in a fixed timber frame with an arched top. The two ground floor windows at the far southern end of the building are timber framed sashes, each is divided horizontally into four rectangular panes. Windows on the upper floors of the northern part of this façade are all timber framed sashes divided into small rectangular panes. all of these timber frames are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition. There are two doors located in the southern half of the façade, both are in timber painted red. The southern is a large double door with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. The northern door is not as wide, it has four panels and a large glazed panel in the upper half. Both doors have rectangular windows above the transoms over the doors which are within fixed frames painted red. Overall all of the windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. (1)
