Full Description
Tall, relatively narrow mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street in an exposed brick, though the brickwork over the ground floor and basement level is painted. The door, which is within a slight recess in the brickwork, is raised slightly from the street level and located on the western side of the façade. It is round headed and there is an original and highly decorative semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. There is a corresponding semi-circular brick arch above the door with a rendered keystone. A further door is located at the basement level, below the steps up to the ground floor door. This is accessed from the street level via a set of steep steps, the top of which is located on the eastern side of the building. There is a single window at the basement, ground, first and second floor levels, all are on the eastern side of the façade and align across all floors. The first and second floor level windows are set within a slight recess within the brickwork. The ground and first floor windows are three light canted bays. The second and basement level windows are flat and align with the central part of the bay. A rendered and painted string course is located over the ground floor level, this is largely obscured by the bay but continues onto the buildings on either side. The second floor window has a flat gauged brick arch above (painted cream) and there is a small possibly original cast iron railing located over the sill. A painted and rendered band and moulded cornice is located over the top of the second floor level, there is some weathering and staining to this. There is a small dormer window located centrally at the roof level behind this parapet, this was not clearly seen. A gutter down pipe runs through a small gap in the brickwork just below the cornice, down to the basement level over the eastern party wall. There is a fair amount of vegetation located within the hopper at the top of this down pipe and the brickwork surrounding it is stained, suggesting that it leaks or has leaked at some point in the past. The basement area is separated from the street by a set of (possibly original) cast iron railings. These railings continue on either side of the steps up to the ground floor door. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The door, which is located on the eastern side of the façade, is in timber painted green with six moulded panels. It is round headed with an original and decorative semi-circular window located above the transom over the door. This has a timber frame painted green and appears to be fixed. A further door is located at the basement level below the steps up to the ground floor door. This is in timber painted green. There are four windows across the main façade, all are located on the western side of door and align across the floors. The ground and first floor level windows are three light canted bays located one on top of another, each part of the bay consists of a timber framed sash. the central portion of each is wider than the outer portions and is divided into four panes by timber glazing bars while the outer are all two panes. The second floor window is flat and small, it is a timber framed sash divided into six panes by timber glazing bars. The basement level window is also a timber framed sash; this is divided into four large panes by timber glazing bars. The dormer window was not clearly seen but also appears to have a timber frame and is divided into multiple panes. All of the window and door frames, and the mullions over the bay are painted green, this paintwork is in a good condition. Overall all windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. A small dormer window is located centrally (discussed above) A tall modern aerial is attached to the roof level, just behind the parapet. (1)
