Full Description

Mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street in an exposed stock brick and a commercial ground floor. There are two doors at the ground floor level, one at either end of the façade, the eastern is within a slight recess. There are decorative panels over each side of the western door and on the eastern side of the eastern door. The area between the two doors is glazed, including the return towards the recessed eastern door, and there is a commercial fascia stretching across both doors and this central window. The basement level was not clearly seen and is separated from the street by a set of possibly original cast iron railings. There are two windows across the first and second floor levels. These align across the floors and are located just off centre, within the western half of the façade. Both have painted flat gauged brick arches above and there is a cast iron balconette over the lower half of the first floor window. The first floor window is much taller than the second floor window and the second floor window has a small cast iron railing located over the sill. A narrow round headed blank/blocked window stretches across bot the first and second floors on the western side of the façade, immediately abutting the western party wall. There is a rendered band over a parapet at the top of the second floor level, this is fairly stained and weathered. A metal gutter down pipe runs through a small gap in the brickwork below this parapet, down to the base of the ground floor level over the eastern party wall. Several modern features are attached to the façade at various locations; these include lights, a security system (with associated wiring) a metal flag pole and a large sign. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.

Both the ground floor doors are in timber painted green, the western has six moulded panels and the eastern has a glazed upper half. There is a window located between these two doors. This consists of a large fixed lower pane and three small rectangular leaded upper panes. The area on the return towards the recessed eastern door is also glazed, again this is divided into a large lower pane and small leaded upper. There are two windows on the upper floors, one per floor. The first floor level window consists of a tall casement window split vertically into two opening sections each of which is divided into four square panes. The second floor window is not as tall and consists of a timber framed sash divided into none rectangular panes by timber glazing pars. All of the timber frames are painted white/cream. There are some small chips and dirt attached to this paintwork but overall all windows and doors are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.

The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. A tall stack is visible over each of the party walls. The eastern is rendered in the lower half and in an exposed brick in the upper and there is a tall aerial attached to it. The western is entirely rendered and there is a fair amount of vegetation growth attached to it. (1)
