Full Description
Mid C19th building located on the southern side of Castle Street in an exposed stock brick and a modern commercial ground floor. The door is located on the western side of the façade; it is raised from the street level and set within a slight recess. There is a large rectangular window located on the western side of the door, the lower part of this window has been blocked. Three small vents are located just above the pavement level, beneath this window, possibly indicating the presence of a basement below this building. there are decorative pilasters over each of the party wall at either end of the ground floor, and a commercial fascia with moulded cornice stretching across the top of it. Much of the upper half of the ground floor level was not clearly seen as it is obscured by a large modern awning. The upper floors are in an exposed brick. There is a single window at both the first and second floor levels, both have flat gauged brick arches above. There is a rendered parapet located directly over the second floor window. There is some staining to the paintwork over this parapet. Several modern features are attached to façade at various locations, these include a large metal flag pole, a security system and a large aerial, as well as the associated wiring. Overall this building appears to be structurally sound and in a good condition.
The door is located on the western side of the façade, within a slight recess. It is in timber painted brown with four panels, the upper two of which are glazed. The ground floor window is large and rectangular. It is fixed within a timber frame painted brow. There is a single window at the first and second floor levels. The first floor window is much taller than the second floor window and consists of a tall casement window split vertically into two opening parts, each of which is divided into four square panes by timber glazing bars. The second floor window is a timber framed sash divided into nine rectangular panes (three wide by three high) by timber glazing bars. All of the frames at the ground floor are painted brown to match the commercial signage while those on the upper floors are painted white, this paintwork is in a good condition though is slightly dirty in places. Overall all windows and the door are in a good condition with all panes present and intact.
The roof level was not clearly seen as it is located behind a parapet. A tall stack is visible over the eastern party wall. (1)
