Full Description

Archaeological evaluation was carried out at the site before redevelopment in 2011. A single trench was excavated and found features provisionally dated to the 13th to 15th centuries, continuing from earlier occupation at the site during the Anglo-Saxon/early medieval period (TR 15 NE 1965). These included postholes and ditches related to agriculatural activity but also refuse pits.(2)

For the medieval period, the 2011 excavation suggested little change in the site's apparent primary function with an increase of the number and distribution of refuse and/or cess pitting. During the period however, evidence suggests buildings and structures being erected with 11 post holes, a single stake-hole and a potential beam-slot being found on site. The presence of further linear features, ditches or gullies, suggesting land divisions are possibly associated with buildings or structures. Finds such as pottery, tile, a small oven and animal bone suggest domestic activities and possible evidence of metal working other industrial activities. Part of the oven's burnt clay super-structure was partly exposed against the edge of excavation, where its base and flue survived. Report suggests it was possibly a small bread oven. Other finds included a medieval finger-ring (SF17) and pendant or mount (SF24), alongside medieval pottery, iron and lead artefacts.

Post-medieval finds at the site comprise animal burials (a piglet and sheep/goat), a tile-lined drain, postholes, and a garden/horticultural feature. (1, 3)
