Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation which took place in 2005 on a plot of land at The Elms, Dymchurch Road, New Romney prior to redevelopment, a series pits were uncovered. The nature of these pits and the artefactual material within them, almost certainly derived from domestic activity, indicates that most of these were domestic refuse pits. A possible linear feature was also located towards the centre of the trench. The function of this feature is uncertain, but it could be a ditch marking a boundary between the lower and upper slopes of the sand dune. Alternatively, it may be a very large pit. These features all date from the later 12th or early 13th century, but probably do not represent a particularly protracted span of activity, as features cut into the sand would not have taken very long to naturally infill. The later provenance of one of the pits which cut a dump deposit, may perhaps indicate a more protracted period of settlement. Unfortunately, this pit remains undated, though it likely derives from a similar period. All of these features and deposits are undoubtedly related to the medieval settlement activity recorded at a site immediately to the west. (1)
