Full Description
During a geophysical assessment of ‘St Martins Field’, a green situated north behind New Romney High Street, which was undertaken in 2010 several linear features were identified and have been interpreted as field drains, small ditched systems or gullies mainly of a narrow proportion. Most of these traverse the field in a northerly direction, however, due to the extensive spread of debris covering the central part of the field further evidence of length and direction is indeterminable. The ditches mainly visible in the southern part of the field, almost certainly mark successive boundary changes, possibly associated with Medieval pottery enclosure or drainage management extending from the High Street. Virtually all of the detected dich systems are probably historic although; there seems no particular correlation between them. Undoubtedly, these anomalies record intense human activity over the most part of the field. (1)
