Full Description
During a geophysical assessment of ‘St Martins Field’, a green situated north behind New Romney High Street, which was undertaken in 2010 several pits, possibly representing the site of inhumation burials were recorded. The discovery of 48 inhumations during excavations in the south field would seem to represent a small proportion of an extensive cemetery associated with the former Church of St Martin. The cemetery appears to be focussed not only around the periphery of the field, but also directly encompassing the suspected site of the church. The absence of any cemetery limits and the density of the low resistance within the southern and western zones, now occupied by commercial and residential buildings would imply that the cemetery has been built upon.
