Monument record TR 15 NE 1814 - Possible prehistoric field system, St Lawrence Cricket Ground

Summary

An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2013 found two ditches that suggested a prehistoric field system aligned approximately east-west. The field system was in a different alignment to the later Roman road that ran along Old Dover road. The evaluation suggested the site remained open up to the construction of the cricket ground in the 19th century. An archaeological watching brief carried out in 2016 also identified features relating to Bronze Age and Pre-Roman agricultural activity on the site in the form of gullies/ditches.

Full Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2013 found two ditches that suggested a prehistoric field system aligned approximately east-west. The field system was in a different alignment to the later Roman road that ran along Old Dover road. The excavators suggested that the field system was associated with a settlement to the west of the cricket ground. The area remained open and agricultural in use until the construction of the cricket ground in the 19th century. (1)

An archaeological watching brief carried out in 2016 also identified features relating to Bronze Age and pre-Roman agricultural activity on the site in the form of gullies/ditches. Of the 'pre-Roman' ditches, one of the ditches measured 420mm in width and 120mm in depth, and may have been part of the same feature excavated at another point of the site. Another ditch measured 500-350mm in width, and 230mm in depth. Two other ditch features were identified as probable Bronze Age in date; one was aligned E-W, one N-S. The latter of the ditches is described as measuring 440mm in width and 70mm in depth.
The ditches contained within their fills, flint waste flakes, burnt clay daub, charcoal flecking, and flint tempered pottery.
Other pits and features at the site seem to have been interpreted as being late post-medieval/modern in origin, with many relating to prevoius archaeological investigations at the site. (2)
