Monument record TQ 67 SW 1594 - Group of seven early Roman pits and possible sunken-feature structure, Springhead, Northfleet

Summary

A group of seven pits with an early roman date were uncovered during excavations at Springhead in 2000-2002. The pits lay close together and were of a variety of shapes and sizes, with no specific functions apparent. One of the pits however, was shallow and markedly sub-rectangular, measuring approximately 4.25 by 3.0 m and 0.15 m deep with a flat base, and this may have been a sunkenfeatured structure of some kind, though there were no associated post- or stake-holes.
