Full Description
Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found two early Roman features overlooking the springs at the head of the Ebbsfleet. Associated with the southern of these two features, which have been interpreted as viewing platforms, was a ditch with an associated flint cobbled wall. The ditch was situated approximately 1.5 m to the rear of the viewing platform, with the wall along its top edge. Only a single course of cobbles survived, extending over a distance of 10 m or so, with a maximum width of 0.75 m. These cobbles appeared to be set directly on the
natural, with no evidence for a foundation trench, and may have provided the base for a wall or simply acted as a revetment. (1)
