Full Description

A small group of small pits were uncovered during the evaluation at the former substation by the Museum of London Archaeology and CgMs for the National Grid and Redrow homes ahead of proposed development. Three pits were recorded within one trench, the one was shallow, sub-circular and was up to 0.90m across and 0.10m deep. It contained six sherds of flint tempered mid to late Bronze Age pottery and a possible saddle quern hand-stone. A second pit was also sub circular which was up to 0.68m across and 0.26m deep and contained a moderate quantity of burnt flint and 15 hand collected and 10 wet sieved recovered sherds of mid Bronze Age to early Iron Age pottery (6th to 7th century BC). It also contained flint tempered pottery of mixed types, including three sherds from two fine bowls and two sherds of a thick base or perforated slab. The relatively large (compared to the site in general) size of the assemblage from these features may indicate nearby prehistoric occupation or activity areas. (1-2)
