Full Description

Archaeological excavation in 2011 found demolition deposits possibly deriving from Brenchley Chantry which was built in 1447 and demolished in c. 1787. The chapel was described as "A beautiful little chapel which stood between two buttresses, immediately under the fifth window of the south aisle, into which it opened ... it was built, as a Chantry Chapel, in 1447, by the Lady Joan Brenchley, widow ofSir William Brenchley, Chief Justice of the King's Bench, in memory of her husband, who
died in the preceding year, and had been buried near this spot" (1)
