Full Description
Building recording on the extant features within at the OMYA Croxton and Garry Whiting Plant site to the north of London Road, Swanscombe, Kent. A footbridge was identified along the north eastern side of the quarry. This footbridge is first shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1908. Its purpose was to carry the footpath, which crosses the site along the northern boundary, over the tram route between the chalk quarry and Whiting Works shown to the north of the site and the quarry located within the site. The bridge follows the north-west – south-east alignment of the footpath above. It is constructed in yellow bricks, laid in English bond within mortar with large gravel inclusions. The bridge is raised above the existing ground level by 3.50m and presents a rectangular opening measuring a width of 4.36m and a depth of 2.12m. The bridge walls to the north-west and south-east have a shallow brick plinth which rises to a height of 1.97m above ground level. The bridge remains in use as a pedestrian walk way to the present day. (1-2)
