Monument record TQ 67 SW 1745 - Rectangular anomalies identified during geophysical survey to the south of Watling Street

Summary

During the geophysical survey which was undertaken on land immediately to the south of Watling Street (A2) at Swanscombe, three rectangular anomalies were identified with responses consistent with burnt or ceramic materials. Though they have not been investigated, they have a possible Roman date based upon the known activity within the area. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

During the geophysical survey which was undertaken on land immediately to the south of Watling Street (A2) at Swanscombe, three areas presented responses consistent with burnt or ceramic materials. The first was located roughly centrally and close to the northern boundary of the site. It was roughly rectangular measuring 11m by 3m. The second is similar to the first and is located towards the southern boundary of the site, close to one of the long linear features. Both may be evidence for a pit feature containing burnt or ceramic materials though there are no clear features related to them so they are difficult to classify. The third area of increased magnetic responses straddles the northern of the two linear features, again close to the southern boundary of the site and again possibly represents an area of former burning or containing debris but is much larger than the first two, measuring approximately 55m by 20m. This may indicate an area occupation given its almost rectangle formation however this is not certain and the area could instead represent a change in the near surface geology. Given the archaeological background of the area, it is highly likely that these features identified are of Romano-British origin, however this is only a speculative date. (1)
