Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation of land to the rear of the Old Sun Public House, Northfleet, the remains three of post medieval or modern structures were revealed. Two of these correspond with former buildings shown on 1865 to 1909 Ordnance Survey Maps and the third comprised a possible culvert. The first wall comprised a 0.60m thick foundation measuring 1.70m long and 0.45m wide discovered at the north corner of the Trench. The structure was severely disturbed and comprised two courses of red brick along with a concrete footing which measured 0.40m in thickness. A chalk face or small limestone blocks sat directly onto a foundation layer of broken bricks and chalk fragments. Another brick structure was identified during the test pit excavation at a depth of 1.40m and was situated along the southern trench boundary. The structure, comprising thirteen courses of red brick joined with lime mortar, measured 0.80m x 0.80m with a thickness of 1.20m and formed a corner of a former building. The bricks were possibly laid in English Bond and set in a hard lime based mortar and was likely exposed on two sides, indicating it was the corner of a structure. Both walls are probably 19th century in date. At the south corner of the Trench a structure interpreted as a culvert was revealed, however, this survived in extremely poor condition. The feature, measuring approximately 1m in diameter and 0.90+m in depth was circular in plan. The structure had been backfilled with a greyish brown sandy material containing a large amount of demolition debris such as large brick chunks, crushed concrete and stones. (1)
