Full Description

Archaeological evaluation carried out behind 90 Wincheap in 2013 found medieval pits and possible post medieval pits. The medieval pits were accompanied by pottery of probable 12th to 14th century date, animal bone, shell and building material. (1,2)
Around 6 pits were excavated, 4 of which were almost certainly medieval in date due to the artefacts found within them. Of the 6 pits, 2 were subrectangular in form, and 1 was subcircular; the forms of the other pits were not recorded. The pits measured between 0.80-4.65m in length, and 0.30-1.8m in width, with the only recorded depth of one of the pits being 0.80m. Artefacts found within the fills of the pits included 53 fragments pf medieval peg tile, 49 sherds of pottery (all of which were recovered from one pit fill), 27 fragments of animal bone, 14 fragments of marine oyster shell, one fragment of copper alloy sheet, and one iron nail. The report describes the pottery assemblage as follows: "With the exception of a small sherd of first-century, Belgic grog-tempered ware and a sherd of shell dusted
ware of c. twelfth- to fourteenth-century date which were recovered from deposit, the assemblage consisted mainly of locally manufactured, Tyler Hill coarse, sandy ware of c. thirteenth- to fourteenth-century date" (from the original report, 3).
