Full Description
A rectangular wattle and daub building was partially uncovered during drainage trench excavations carried out at Springhead. the remains consisted of a baked clay floor and possibly belonged to a relatively small rectangular building fronting the south western side of Watling Street. The building appears to have been burnt down at some point during the Roman occupation of the area. It is notable for the presence of a great quantity of samian ware sherds which were discovered within the deposits overlying the clay floor. This suggests that it may have been a samian ware shop and its location close to the line of Watling Street strengthens this theory. A possible kiln and oven located within the immediate vicinity of this structure may be related but this is not certain. (1-2)
