Full Description
A tiled platform was discovered in 1845 close to the line of the Roman road, though its precise location is not known. It may have been used for cremations as it was reported as being heavily burned and the presence of calcined bone was discovered within deposits associated with it. the original description of the excavation which recorded the feature notes that ‘Whilst the labourers were cutting down a portion of the Wingfield Bank to widen the road […] they laid bare a foot above the level of the present road, a platform composed of square tiles, 7ft (2m) long and 2.5ft (0.8m) wide. upon it were fragments of calcined human bones and masses of charcoal. The tiles were much damaged from the action of fire’. (1)
