Full Description
An archaeological evaluation in 2004 discovered a number of post medieval features. Subsequent evaluation in 2016 discovered further features. These were believed to relate to a late 16th/early 17th structure and to an 18th century dwelling subsequently demolished by 1845 when the land was used as part of a dairy.
The 2004 evaluation identified an 18th or early 19th century drain, an early 19th century chalk floor and clay foundation. These features were sealed by a late 19th century warehouse building at the site. The clay foundation and chalk floor may have been associated with later phases of construction at a dwelling built in the 17th century which adjoined the now demolished 18th century baths. Another interpretation is that the floor may have originated from a 19th century building constructed at the site prior to 1874. (1)
Further evaluation was carried out in 2016 at St Radigund's Street. Medieval deposits and layers at the site were cut by the excavtion of at least 6 pits, three of which were large and sub-circular and contained early-mid 16th century pottery. A flood silt deposit indicating a period of abandonment was also identified as dating from the early post-medieval period.
Structures dating from the post-medieval period included a series of walls including dwarf walls, and building foundations for a timber building, alongside a brick built oven. The structure(s) are thought to potentially represent a workshop or barn associated with the Hospice (TR 15 NE 82) when it was in use as a tannery in the late 17th-early 18th century. (2)
