Full Description

Archaeological excavation in 2014 (trench 1) found features dating to the late iron age / early Roman transition period. These consisted of cultivated soils, stakeholes and a pit. The soil produced three late iron age sherds, ceramic building material, worked and burnt flint and animal bone. A levelling layer produced further pottery and bone. Finds from the pit and stakeholes included a La Tene III copper alloy brooch, Roman tile, glass, animal remains and industrial material.

It is suggested that the features relate to a structure located within the triple-ditched iron age enclosure (cf TR 15 NW 1762).

In the early Roman period the area was levelled and replaced by a metalled surface that was believed to be a continuation of a courtyard noted north-west of a second century building R11, excavated in the earlier Marlow excavations.
