Full Description

Archaeological excavation in 2013/14 found several Neolithic/Early Bronze Age features including cremation burials and pits. The cremation group consisted of three burials (cremations 2, 3, and 5) and two possible associated pits. The cremations were accompanied by pottery finds and one of the cremations seemed to be in a cloth container.
The cremations were located within circular/sub-circular pits; cremation 2 measured 0.54m in diameter and 0.30m in depth, cremation 3 measured 0.44m in length, 0.36m in width, and 0.16m in depth, and cremation 5 measured 0.40-0.35m in diameter and survived up to 0.05m in depth.

Cremation 2 contained a concentration of burnt human bone within the fill contained within a probable cloth container. Analysis of the remains suggested that the individual was a probable adult male. Environmental samples revealed evidence for pottery fragments, hammerscale/metallurgical residue/heat affected material, probable glass, unburnt fish bone, a single grain of barley, and flecks of charcoal. These are all thought to be residual apart from possibly the pottery.

Cremation burial 3 contained 4g of burnt human bone (recovered from an environmental sample), alongside 3 sherds of decorated with vertical lines of finger impressions. An environmental sample of the fill of the pit contained material which was all thought to be residual; this "included fish bone, oyster shell, traces of glass(?), burnt flint, pot/CBM fragments, clinkered plant material, charcoal, charred plant remains (grass stem, ?pulse fragments, small seeds, hazelnut shell, possible clinkered cereal grain) and heat affected material" (from the original report, 1).

Cremation burial 5 did not reveal evidence for human remains, therefore it is classed as a 'probable' cremation burial due to the presence of a pottery vessel of similar design to others found in funerary contexts. The fill of the pit contained 33 sherds of pottery which represented frgaments of one vessel with a slightly turned in rim, decorated with "wide-spaced vertical lines of shallow finger impressions" (from the original report, 1). The pottery is suggested to have an early Bronze Age date - potentially "representing an accessory vessel or small cordoned urn in a similar form to a collared urn" (from the original report, 1).

The two pit features were undated but were earlier stratigraphically than the later prehistoric soil horizon at the site, suggesting that they may have been contemporary with the cremation burials at the site. The pits measured 0.41-0.49x0.31-0.35x0.21m. One of the pits was found to contain charcoal flecking, burnt flint, and heat affected clay or possible daub. (1)
