Full Description

Archaeological excavation in 2013/14 found extensive late Roman (AD 270-410) features on the eastern side of the excavation area. These included an enclosed, inhumation cemetery, enclosures, cremation burials, a quarry pit and a number of miscellaneous pits and post holes.

The cemetery contained at least 20 burials, almost all of which contained skeletal material. Most had coffins and were accompanied by a range of grave goods. These included complete pottery vessels, including on Oxfordshire ware vessel elaborate demi-rosette decoration, stamping and a facemask. Caskets containing funerary items were also found. The cemetery was set within a rectangular enclosure and the other enclosures to the south-east were also rectilinear in nature. They were filled with domestic debris and may suggestextra-mural settlement on the road from Canterbury to Dover. (1)
