Full Description
Excavations at Ebbsfleet Green over several years, but particularly during Phase 6 of the Ebbsfleet Green construction project located an unsual Roman pit surrounded by stake holes. Pit [912] was sub-rectangular and measured 2.80m (north to south) by 2.00m (east to west) and 0.20m deep. It had shallow sides and was 100% excavated where not previously truncated by gully [900]. It had a single fill: a mid greyish brown sandy silt that was dated AD 40–400 by Roman pottery and ceramic building material, with residual prehistoric pottery. Charred plant remains were recovered from bulk sample {947}. The pit was surrounded on three sides (to north, to south and to west) by nine stake holes that are presumed to be contemporary with the pit.(1)
