Full Description
Excavations at Ebbsfleet Green over several years, but particularly during Phase 6 of the Ebbsfleet Green construction project located a substantial Romano-British enclosure.
The enclosure comprised the entire c 50m-long, south-east side of a rectangular enclosure together with the northern and southern returns extending to the north-west, beyond the limit of excavation. Its general profile was that of a shallow bowl up to 2.30m wide and 0.35m deep, filled with a mid brownish grey sandy silt. It was dated AD 50–150 by pottery and contained a melon bead. This feature was possibly aligned with the Roman Road to south (see Fig 31).
A gully 6.6m long was also found that contained pottery from AD 40-400 and a pit dated AD 50-400.
The complex is important as it provides information about the landscape in the hinterland of Springhead Roman town. (1)
