Full Description
Archaeological evaluation carried out in 1999 at the former Argos site, Sturry road, found prehistoric, Roman and medieval finds and undated archaeological features.
Two possible ditch features, one probably dating from the later prehistoric period, and one undated (although likely to be Roman or early medieval).
One of the features was large with a width of between 2.70-3.08m, and ran NW-SE. The fill of the feature contained struck flints, a sherd of 'Belgic' pottery, a sherd of late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pottery, and fragments of Romano-British/pre-Claudian Roman imported pottery. The feature has been suggested to have had a number of functions - from a prehistoric clay quarry or a ditch with a defensive function - for example, representing an outlying earthwork of late 'Belgic' Canterbury - or the ditch of an Iron Age or Bronze Age ring-barrow.
The smaller of the features was linear and aligned E-W and was straight with vertical sides. The fill of the feature contained fragments of probable Roman tile/pottery and a single sherd of Anglo-Saxon/early medieval pottery. This feature may have been a robber trench for the removal of wall/sewer/pipe, or it may also have been a ditch. Some suggestions as to its function include the robber trench for a Roman or early medieval water-duct/wall of a Roman shrine/wall of a Roman ustrinum (a funeral bier enclosure). (1)
