Full Description

A ditch was identified running south west to north east during a watching brief in Snowdown in 2019. Modern material was recovered from the fill. The location and orientation of the ditch corresponds well with open trenching visible in 1940s aerial photography. The report notes that it is possible that the ditch represents second world war anti-invasion works located in proximity to gun emplacements 200m to the south, 'although how they might have functioned is unclear'. Alternatively, the earthworks could have been 'practice trenches or training area obstacles'. (1)
