Full Description
significant remains of medieval pottery and bone alongside a medieval pit were recorded during a watching brief carried out on land off Church Lane, New Romney. The medieval pit was encountered beneath a 400mm thick deposit of medieval rubbish. The presence of this pit suggests that it is likley that many more medieval rubbish pits existed in the area. Rubbish pits of this kind are common near market centres of medieval towns and provide constant evidence tha this area of New Romney was densely utilized during the mid 13th to early 14th century. The quality of the medieval refuse found indicated that the town enjoyed a better range of pottery then the contemporary peasant settlements in the hinterland. (1).
