Full Description
Several features which may be reasonably interpreted as rubbish/cess pits were discovered during excavations at The Elms in New Romney, Kent. The fills of these pits contained material datable to the 13th and 14th centuries. Two of these features were loacted within the footprint of a post built structure that had a similar date. One was rectangular in plan with four fills, one of which contained burnt bone an a wide range of other atrefacts. The other was also sub rectangular in plan, it had a single fill again with a variety of finds. The third pit was large and circular with a single fill which contained the largest assemblage of pottery bone and cmb. The final two pits were intercutting and again contained a substantial range of artefacts. (1)(information summarised from source)
