Full Description
Archaeological investigation ahead of development of a plot along Church Road, New Romney, revealed a large pit with a likely medieval date. It was located immediatle to the north-east of the Medieval timber building that was also uncovered at this site. It was ovoid in shape and of an uncertain size (only seen in section) though it was at least 3.5m by 3m and in excess of 0.4m deep. It contained a series of dumped deposits which dipped shaply in the centre of the pit. These fillings consisted of large quantities of either broken clay flooring or clay wall infill debris, separated by layers of ash and carbon and may represent site clearance of the remaining debris of the destoryed phase 2 timber building. Though there was no datable material from the fills, stratigraphically it would appear to have come at or soon after the end of the second phase of occupation of the timber building, when the timber building was destoryed.
