Full Description
Archaeological investigation ahead of development of a plot along Church Road, New Romney, revealed a large pit of a probable later Medieval date. The pit was excavated sometime aftern the second phase of the nearby masonry structure which was located nearby and which has a likley later medieval date. It was roughly sub square shaped in plan, measured in excess of 4m by 3.5m with sloped sides and a depth in excess of 0.8m. The base was not seen. Its filling cinsisted of a series of dumped silt and soil deposits many containing crushed mortar, small ragstone pieces, stone and chalk lump rubble and broken slates. These layers had then been covered by a thin deposit containing much carbon. The pit was sealed by a layer of ashy clay, carbon and domestic rubbish which contained material datable to 1475-1500. the exact function of the pit is not clear but it may be associated with the demolistion of the structure.
