Full Description

A series of later medieval/early post medieval cut features were discovcered along with a soil horizon of the same date within a trench during an archaeological evaluation that was carried out on land to the rear of 60-76 High Street, New Romney. Where present the dateable material suggests a late fifteenth- to sixteenth- or seventeenth-century date. No definitive interpretation can be made for these features although it is likely the pits were cut for disposal of refuse. The two linear features F2 and F5, recorded in trenches 1 and 3 respectively, are thought to be garden features or drainage ditches; similar aligned features were seen in CAT’s excavation through St Martin’s Field less than 15 m. to the west of trench 3. Cultivated soil horizons found in all five trenches indicate that the site had gone out of use around the end of the medieval period and through the earlier post-medieval sixteenth- to eighteenth-centuries. This would tie in with the demolition of St Martin’s Church in 1549, and during the proceeding period the site becomes associated with properties along the High Street cultivated as garden plots.
