Monument record TR 26 NE 1307 - Medieval Site 3, enclosures and a SFB- Plateau 2, Thanet Earth

Summary

The medieval features on Thanet Earth dated to between the mid-eleventh century to the early part of the fourteenth (possibly extending to AD 1350). The activity is primarily agricultural in nature with significant elements of domestic occupation. A site wide system of enclosures appears to be intimately related to various trackways across the site. The activity around these enclosures has been grouped into a number of Medieval ‘sites’. Site 3 was located on the northern part of Plateau 2, and comprised an isolated enclosure that was established in early in the medieval period, representing a continuation of the string of early enclosures along trackway 28. It was later replaced by a larger enclosure, a sunken feature building appears to be associated with this later phase enclosure. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

In detail: the early enclosure (Enclosure 40) was 100m south of the complex of Site 2 to the west of Trackway 28 and it is likely with the earliest medieval phase droveway (c. 1050-1175). It comprised segments of ditches which, along with trackway 28, enclosed an area c.31 x 24m internally. Virtually no features can be confidently associated with this enclosure suggesting that it may have been related to stock keeping. The later enclosure (enclosure 41) was an almost exact remodelling of the earlier layout except that its southern side was extended slightly south with its ditch swung to the south, so that it was perpendicular to the droveway which increased the internal area to c.33m. The ditch mostly contained a uniform fill which yielded a small assemblage of pottery of the eleventh to early thirteenth century as well as animal bone, mussel shell, grain, seed and hazelnut. There were few features within the enclosure, although some probably related features were situated just outside its south-western side, but the most significant feature was another sunken-featured structure (SFB 34) over and cutting the western droveway ditch in the south-east corner of the enclosed area, within the entrance in this corner of earlier Enclosure 40. Within this SFB was a sub-circular 'clunch' built oven, at a surviving height of 0.9m. This structure was a particularly well preserved example showing much of the superstructure of the oven. The only features within the Enclosures 40/41 (Fig. 173) were four small pits or post holes in the south-western quadrant, which were not datable and may not be related. Outside the area of the enclosure, 15m to the south another sunken feature building was uncovered, this was not securely dated and was heavily truncated. (1) (information summarised from source)
