Full Description
Possible prehistoric ditch excavated as part of an archaeological evaluation of land at Brick Kiln Farm in April 2022. The evaluation took place ahead of residential development in the area.
The ditch was located to the west of the site in trench 26 and possibly continued to the east in trench 25. In Trench 26, the ditch cut measured 1.67x0.67x0.31m. In Trench 25, the ditch cut measured 1.5x0.8x0.11m.
Flintwork, including a broken blade-like flake and two chips, was excavated from the fill of the ditch. The blade-like flake has been dated to before the Middle Bronze Age - suggesting it is Neolithic/Early Bronze Age in date. It is unclear whether the flintwork is contemporary with the ditch or whether it represents residual fill, therefore it is unclear if the ditch dates from the same period as the finds.
Prehistoric finds from the surrounding area include Mesolithic flint debitage, a Neolithic flint assemblage and an Iron Age gold coin - these represent finds within a 1km radius of the site.
Other features uncovered at the site included a series of 17th century and post-medieval ditches and quarry pits. (1)
