Full Description
Three probable Romano-British ditches were excavated during an archaeological evaluation of Manston Court Bungalows, Kent between 26 February and 1 March 2019. This was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust Ltd in advance of redevelopment, including the construction of 22 residential properties at the site.
The three Romano-British ditches were excavated in trench 4. these were aligned NE-SW and have been interpreted as having formed part of a Roman field system. The ditches were dated as a result of the presence of a single sherd of Roman pottery found within the fill of one of them. Residual deposits of 3 prehistoric sherds were also found within the fill of the ditches.
The depth of archaeology excavated during this evaluation is between 0.26m-1.2m below the ground surface.
Known Romano-British activity in the local area includes Roman tile and pottery, alongside two Roman pits, the infill of which included fragments of oyster and land snail shells.
Prehistoric archaeology from the local area include settlements, barrows, and pits, the majority of which date from the Neolithic-Iron Age periods. (1)
