Full Description
Three prehistoric ditch features were revealed during excavations at land north of Thanet Way, Herne Bay, Kent. The evaluation and excavations were commissioned by Lidl Great Britain Limited as part of preparations for the construction of a new store. Other features at the site dated from the Medieval (TR 16 NE 1383) and Roman (TR 16 NE 1384) periods.
The prehistoric ditches were aligned NW-SE; they were up to 0.35m wide, and two were up to 0.2m deep. The ditches contained some pottery inclusions, with one of the ditches containing a concentration of probable late Iron Age pottery. Some residual Iron Age pottery was also present within some of the later features, suggesting the presence of occupation material within the area.
The ditches are thought to represent part of a field system within the wider prehistoric landscape, suggesting that there may be further, more concentrated activity to the SW of the excavation area. (1)
