Full Description

Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated at 11 Dover Street in advance of residential development. These excavations comprised an initial evaluation of three trenches in 2017, followed by a watching brief in 2018. These excavations revealed a post-Roman layer, possibly representing ploughing activity, this was followed by medieval occupation and post-medieval activity at the site.

The initial evaluation identified a number of pits, around 5 small, around 2 large, associated with the earlier phase of medieval occupation at the site. Many of these are thought to represent refuse pits. The earlier phase of medieval activity also revealed the presence of a possibe floor deposit, which appears to be cut and overlain by medieval features including a pit containing 13th-14 century pottery, suggesting building work may have been short-lived.
The second phase of medieval and early post medieval (1400-1700) activity included the construction of a chalk block, natural clay and white mortar wall, alongside a levelling deposit thought to form the foundation for a possible building horizon, indicating further construction activity at the site during this period. Finds recovered from the site include pottery, CBM, slag, one iron nail, and a small copper alloy assemblage, including pins and a possible hair pin. Not all of these finds have been recorded in this record as some of the contexts are unclear (1).

The watching brief identified a possible medieval wall which is thought to represent the rear of one of the medieval buildings that fronted Dover Street. This is thought to represent the earlier medieval phase of development at the site, and implying that the later (around 16th century) phase did not extend as far back from the street frontage. One of the associated layers was formed of clay and is thought to have been associated with the wall - probably representing a floor. No specific finds or find types are listed in the report (2).
