Full Description
Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated at 11 Dover Street in advance of residential development. These excavations comprised an initial evaluation of three trenches in 2017, followed by a watching brief in 2018. These excavations revealed a post-Roman layer, possibly representing ploughing activity, this was followed by medieval occupation and post-medieval activity at the site.
The evidence for a pre medieval soil horizon was discovered during the initial evaluation of the site, comprising mixed brown grey/grey-brown clay silt with occasional oyster shell and flint inclusions. This is interpreted as possible ploughsoil - indicating Roman or post-Roman agricultural activity at the site. These layers were estimated to be around 0.15m and 0.4m in two different areas where they were identified. (1)
During the watching brief, a layer of soft dark brown clay is thought to represent a continuation of this deposit, but is here interpreted as being post-Roman plough soil. (2)
