Full Description

The site was excavated in October and November 2014, following an evaluation in October 2014. The excavation revealed evidence for archaeological activity at the site from the Mesolithic to the post-Saxon periods (TQ 57 SE 392, TQ 57 SE 393, TQ 57 SE 394). This took the form of flint working debris, and the creation of pits and post-holes at the site.

The Mesolithic to Bronze Age layer of colluvium on land at Tylers, Brent Way, Dartford contained a large quantity of struck flint and burnt stones. The layer contained around 577 struck flints, and 88 burnt stones.

The first period of flintworking (Mesolithic to early Neolithic) included prismatic blades, core rejuvenation flakes, and possible blade cores. One particularly interesting find was a possible Mesolithic axe/adze sharpening flake which was located within an Middle Bronze Age pit feature.

The second period of flintworking (late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age) included a rod-like artefact described as a possible 'fabricator', possible evidence for Levallois technology, cores, and an Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead (thought to be ceremonial in function). Other artefacts also possibly associated with this period of flintworking include a retouched piercer, a scraper, and a wedge.

1 sherd of Late Bronze Age pottery and 4 sherds of pottery dating to the Middle Iron Age/Romano-British periods were associated with the layer of colluvium, however, these are thought to represent residual deposits.

The flintworking is thought to represent transient activity on the site during the Mesolithic and prehistoric periods from settlement nearby.

Many post-Saxon pits were also revealed at the site; these produced no artefactual material and could not be conclusively dated.(1)
