Monument record TQ 57 SE 392 - Middle Bronze Age - Late Iron Age/Romano-British pits, postholes, and occupational layers on land at Tylers, Brent Way, Dartford

Summary

Pits and post holes dating to between the Middle Bronze Age - Late Iron Age/Romano-British periods. These contained struck flint, burnt flint, and pottery dating to between these periods. The post holes are thought to form a post-built structure over one of the pits, and, at another point of the site, they function as an animal enclosure or fence boundary.

Full Description

The site was excavated by Pre-Construct Archaeology in October and November 2014, following an evaluation in October 2014. The excavation revealed evidence for archaeological activity at the site from the Mesolithic to the post-Saxon periods (TQ 57 SE 391, TQ 57 SE 393, TQ 57 SE 394). This took the form of flint working debris, and the creation of pits and post-holes at the site.

The first phase of occupation at the site is Middle Bronze Age; this is characterised by the creation of pits, one cluster (intercut and subcircular), 6 isolated pits, and 1 other pit around which 3 post holes have been created (suggesting a post-built structure may have been created over the pit). Another cluster of post holes is present in other area of the site; these are aligned NW-SE with possible NE-SW intersections, suggesting that they may represent fence-lines and/or animal enclosures. Finds from these features include a small quantity of struck flint and burnt flint, some of which dates to the Middle Bronze Age-Iron Age (some of this assemblage is also thought to be residual, such as a Mesolithic axe fragment found within one of the pits). At least 3 sherds of Late Bronze Age pottery is also present associated with the pits and post holes.

The second phase of occupation at the site is Mid-Late Iron Age - Romano-British. This phase is characterised by the creation of a N-S subcircular pit arrangement, and the creation of 3 other small pit features. The N-S pit arrangement contained some (probably residual) burnt and struck flint in the fills. The 3 small pits contained pottery dating to the Mid-Late Iron Age/Roman period (some of which may have been residual).

Many post-Saxon pits (TQ 57 SE 394) were also revealed at the site; these produced no artefactual material and could not be conclusively dated.(1)
