Full Description
Medieval and post-medieval pit cutting on land at 74 Wincheap, Canterbury was identified during an archaeological evaluation in 2016. The site also demonstrated evidence for Roman, Anglo-Saxon/early medieval, and post-medieval deposits/features.
The pits measured as follows 0.6m x 0.32m, 1.0m in diameter, 0.42m diameter, 1.2m diameter, and <0.8m x <0.8m. Artefacts associated with the pits include peg tile and brick. The pits are thought to indicate local occupational activity.
Later activity at the site included the construction of a timber outhouse for a building on the street frontage; the building it may have been associated with is possibly visible in a map dating to 1640 AD, suggesting a late 17th century date for the outhouse. (1)
