Full Description
Medieval and post-medieval features were excavated at land to the rear of the Falstaff Hotel, Canterbury. The features included probable medieval post-holes and a small oven/hearth feature, alongside medieval and post-medieval pits.
The oven/hearth comprised a deposit 1x0.40m, forming the base for a subcircular depression
which was "0.55m wide and filled by a light to mid greyish brown, firm, silty clay which contained frequent, small, chalk and charcoal fragments. The underlying clay was heat scorched for
some 0.05-0.10m around the edge of the cut" (from the original report (1)).
The pits ranged in dimensions between around 2.41-0.82m in length, 2-0.35m in width, and 0.70-0.17m in depth. The post-holes measured 0.44m long by 0.32m wide and 0.34m long by 0.25m wide.
The only find recovered from the fill of one of the pit features and comprised a single sherd of 12th-13th century pottery, with a shell temper.
Other features excavated at the site include the NW-SE aligned brick walls of a post-medieval cellar feature and rammed chalk floors which had been cut by the construction of the cellar walls. The cellar was associated with a brick paviour yard surface, with later activity comprising the construction of a 20th century wall and associated concrete foundation, alongside the infilling of the cellar.(1)
