Late medieval and/or early post-medieval features at 54 Northgate, Canterbury were excavated during an archaeological evaluation in 2017. The features include walls and associated floor surfaces, a pit and post-holes.
One of the walls had a visible length of 2m and was 0.40m in width. The other wall had a length in excess of 1.40m and was around 0.30m wide. Both walls were constructed from limestone, chalk, and flint, with one also having bricks as part of the construction material. One of the walls lay parallel to the north of St John's Place, the other wall lay on the NE side of, perpendicular to the NW end of the first wall.
One of the floor surfaces, comprised of beaten clay lay beneath the other probable floor surface which comprised a clay/silt, carbon rich occupation deposit. The surfaces lay to the east of the wall features.
The pit measured 0.85m long by 0.75m wide and contained in its fill fragments of peg-tile, abraded chalk and charcoal.
One of the post-holes was 0.38m in diameter, the other was 0.20m in diameter. The post-holes contained fragments of charcoal and mortar/plaster.
Later post-medieval activity at the site included a later phase of residential building and pit digging.(1)
